Sgian Dubh

Scottish Jewelry from Donaldson's of Crieff

Dubh means black, sgian means dagger - 'black dagger'. These traditionally had black handles however there was a hidden meaning to black - literally hidden and secret! The knife would be hidden in the clothing and used as a weapon of last resort. As a mark of courtesy to a host the knife would be worn in an open manner - prominently in the hose.
